How Pokémon and Other RPGs Creatively Implement Random Encounters
Random encounters don't get a lot of love these days and are often instantly seen as outdated. Can they still be viable if used effectively though? In this video I make my case for why I think they can be.

    Gods, Vagrant Story needs a remake. I always hoped for a sequel, but by now I would even be happy with a HD version for PS5. A really great game that suffered from some very tedious combat system. ...I one shot'ed a Dragon by stabbing it with a knife/dagger.😅 I prefer NIER Gestalt, because we don't have enough older adult heroes in JRPGs. Why couldn't they do a remake for that one too. I would have bought it. I played Vandal Hearts 1 and 2. 2 has more in game politics and it is also longer and I think also more difficult. There are 4 different endings, I think, depending on your actions. I think it Vandal Hearts 1 compares to 2 like Dragon Age 1 to Inquisition in my opinion.

    I played this in 2000 shortly after release in Germany. I think it is one of the more difficult games in the Star Ocean series. I personally don't really like those types of combat. They feel so chaotic and uncoordinated. Micromanaging your companions skills and magic is an absolute neccessity to manage the fighting. The talent system was great. I love it. I personally prefer playing as Claude, as it gives me real isekai'd vibes. And I wish I could have Dias as companion instead of Leon. He's not bad, but... both him and Precis rarely are in my party, because I don't like taking kids into deadly battles. And as you can only have a limited number of companions... I prefer more mature fighters.

    7th Saga....I died constantly and finally gave up. I agree on FFIV. Phantasy Star 2 was my very first RPG. I made my own maps for the dungeons in 1991/92. No looking up stuff on the internet. I personally feel Phantasy Star 1 is, overall, much more difficult than 2.

  • @neosildrake
    @neosildrake 4 дні тому

    Phantasy Star 2 was my very first RPG. Phantasy Star 3 always felt unfinished to me. As if they were rushing to meet the deadline and skipped content over that. While some generations seem to have more "life" to them, others feel like an afterthought. I think they really needed at least another 6 or even 12 months to have it where it should have been. I felt kinda bored after a while. Phantasy Star 4 is undoubtedly the best gameplay wise. It is the easiest of the 4 games and Phantasy Star 1 is, imo, the most difficult. My mom loved the town theme of Tonoe.

    One of the big criticisms of random-encounter systems is their (occasionally lengthy) transition sequences in/out of _every battle._ Take that Breath of Fire 3 clip, for example -- battles take place on the same map you're already exploring, but it still takes a second for your party to appear in formation, plus a few _more_ for it to load in the actual enemies. For my "ideal game" I think random encounters would have a place in it, but with a distinction that not every _encounter_ is necessarily a _fight._ The game would have an emphasis on discovery/research (think of the Pokedex objectives in Legends Arceus), encounters would play out on the same map as general movement/exploration, BUT "dungeons" are definitely biased towards hostile (combat) encounters and the engine will tend to spawn them "off-camera" to catch you by surprise.

    I really dont mind the random encounters, although some things are more tedious than other things. There should be enough time in between the battles so that exploring unknown grounds isnt as punishing. Encounters should alway scale a bit with your level, or at least not have lvl 1 monsters show up when youre level 30 for example. And unlike boss battles, standard battles should not be too long

    Just came across this video, and sadly with how late it is, I need to get to bed. Also because I am tired. I will watch this later. I played Wild Arms as a kid, it was a hand down that I got from a friend of my dads, along with other games (FFVII among them) and my first PS1. As much as I loved FFVII, I got so stupidly confused about it telling me to insert the 2nd disc. I had all the discs, but I was stupid. So I moved onto playing Wild Arms. I enjoyed the art and feel of the game a lot. And I wish I could remember the story. But I did play each characters intros like 20 times before I figured out that I needed to pick them up with another character. Mind you, me stupid. But I had a lot of fun replaying those same sections. Until I finally learned to progress. Still don't fully understand the unlock/learn magic system as well as I should.

    Some games on the GameCube and PS2 still used these. But they were few and far between. Probably the best example of these in the next generation is Baten Kaitos. The backgrounds in that game were absolutely stunning. Some could easily have been put up in a gallery.

    I agree with some of your points and disagree with others. Chrono Trigger is so perfect it is usually my go-to for any and everything. I do prefer the enemies to be visible and to have the possibility of fleeing or postponing an encounter. Some, though, you'll have a really hard time avoiding, or won't be able to no matter what. It all comes to the environment and the positioning of said monsters, a big monster or a party of monsters in a very tight spot is a sure fight. Or you can have monsters that chase the player with an extra oomph while others would flee. You said that you'd probably not be able to evade an encounter in a dark cave, and I guess you're partially right, but. But. You even showed The 7th Saga! I haven't gone far at all into it but all you need is the first open field. Encounters are NOT random, you can see them in the minimap. Now you just TRY avoiding all of them. You can't, you simply can't. Now take the minimap off and keep the effect. You can make enemies roam invisible too. You could also opt for the easiest trick in the book, one which Final Fantasy I and II (and possibly III but I don't remember) used a lot: spots on the floor where you're forced to battle every time you set foot there, but also easily avoidable if you know them. Here's what a perfect game would look like for me. Actually, I'll give three examples, three games I'd love to make if I could or play if I found them. All of them turn-based, as that is the sole thing that brought me to RPGs (I love their stories too, but there are other genres with good stories and I could also read a book). First: A Monster Hunter-like game. Open world, limited only by your levels and equipment and your courage to face bigger and more threatening monsters always farther away from home and safety. It could have a world map but only for consulting, because every square inch of the desert or of the mountain and every field in between you'd have to travel on foot, or through fast travel after you get there walking at least once. You'd see almost every enemy out there from afar, and then you could decide if you'd fight them or not. But some would ambush you from above, below, from a corner, etc. And some would actually flee, so if you really want to fight them you'd have to use the environment to trap them somehow, or maybe fire a tracking or stunning arrow or something like that. Second: A traditional epic fantasy quest (see what I did there?). Again, in dungeons you could always see the enemies, but some you woudn't be able to avoid for a reason or two (tight corridors, chasing, or simply for standing smack in the middle of your path on purpose). Others would flee you. Can you imagine hunting for a Metal Slime or a Mover all along a dark cave trying to avoid every other encounter? That would be fun. On the overworld, Breath of Fire III's desert part is almost perfect. At random or whenever prompted by a "!" sign above the character's head you could ignore or not, you'd be drawn into a smaller field where you could see items and/or enemies you could ignore and flee from, though some would be alerted by you simply moving in any direction, thus forcing a battle. Third: A manga-like (Bleach, Jujutsu Kaisen) monster raid game. Again, open world in a smaller setting, like a whole city. I always think Saints Row IV and Gat Out of Hell because of the Wardens and the demons. You control a group of characters responsible for slaying the monsters that haunt a small city or neighborhood, and you could either sense their presence Valkyrie Profile-like style, scaling a tall building and expanding a radar-like sixth sense, or simply follow the screams and the path of destruction. I read a very good novel last year called Nightmare City by P. S. Newman where a phenomenom happened which makes people's dreams come true in the form of Shades. Some of the Shades are a small volcano in the middle of L.A. which is a portal to hell, huge fire breathing chimeras, hell hounds, a fire-wielder doppelganger of a megacorp CEO and a character from a girl's favorite comics made real. Imagine that in a Saints Row environment and turn-based combat: that has been my dream game for a decade now. Where the hell are the monsters in Yakuza - Like a Dragon?!? A boss battle in the sewers or subways with a huge monster stuck in a tunnel is a must (Google "Subway Boris Groh" for a very good visual cue). So, yeah, not a fan of random encounters. But I understand why they were used in earlier games, not why they're still a thing. Not at all.

  • @ruolbu
    @ruolbu 9 днів тому

    I kinda like the idea of random encounters being unpredictable but avoidable. Visible enemies are predictable and lack punch. Sudden random encounters add tension to exploration. The thing is, instead of groaning when the transition occurs, I want there to be a positive reaction, an event to engage with, something that gives you agency. If you want to fight, this event could be an opportunity to get advantage in battle, if you want to avoid the battle, this event could be your chance to prevent the fight altogether, and if you are exploring the dungeon without a care in the world, it might surprise you and have you scramble to at least prevent being at a disadvantage. I imagine a sort of QTE, like your character gets an exclamation mark, an enemy suddenly rushes towards you and you have to react to what they do. Fail and the battle starts, possibly with unfavourable conditions, succeed and you get the benefit you want.

    Holy crap! You guys can make videos under a half hour???? 🤣🤣🤣 Like always this is an amazing video. It's definitely not something I had probably thought about. I completely agree with you that random encounters in dungeons but not on overworld would be ideal. I loved how wild ARMs did it with the exclamation point. I think it was 3 that had a green exclamation for weaker encounters you could cancel, white and red? Or am I misremembering? And you just answered it. 🤣🤣🤣 I believe Fantasian, which is about to be ported, had an interesting encounter system. I think you can cancel up to a certain amount of encounters but you don't fully cancel them, you bank them. Then when you bank the max you fight all the ones you banjed back to back and go back to 0 banked.

    The whole "turn-based RPGs are outdated" idea is outdated lol. It was made and spread by out of touch game publishers after the mega-success of the OG Diablo and RTS games like Command & Conquer. In reality it holds just as much merit as their current out of touch ideas like "single-player games are dead" or "games need microtransactions to be profitable". It's kinda sad how people still fall for this crap.
